I watched Sesame Street all the time as a kid. Elmo was my favorite character and I have fond memories of that era. It wasn't until I was 12 years old that I found out how weird and disturbing Classic Sesame Street was when I saw a video by Dena of the Film Den. First, here are some runners up:
Bigger than the World - A frog (who reminds me A LOT of Gabi from Rio) says that she could make herself as big as the world. The frog inflates herself until she's the size of a beach ball and then explodes for no apparent reason. Jim Henson sure loved senseless violence!
Orange sings Carmen - I don't find this one scary at all, but in this sketch an orange with a wig is singing an opera song. It apparently scared a lot of people, but I don't find it all that scary.
Daddy Dear - Daddy Dear is a cute song a girl sings to her dad that has very creepy visuals including a roaring dandelion, a realistic painting of a dragon, and a really creepy doll. I personally think it's kind of cute, but I'm sure it scared many kids back in the day.
And Now The Octopus - This film shows an octopus, that's it! Nothing scary, here.
Now it's time for the list:
1:The Crack Master - The Crack Master is an animation about a girl laying in her bed imagining cracks on the wall turning into animals. She then meets a scary Crack Monster who yells really loud "I AM CRACK MASTER!" and destroys himself trying to be mean. The animation was nowhere to be found for years and it took them 5 years to find it. One blogger lady (who remembered the sketch as a kid), had to get a private screening from one man who had obtained the sketch and was forced not to share it. The sketch was then posted by a Muppet Central Forum member who received it as a Christmas gift.
2:Count To Ten With Nobody - This weird little video shows a rubber band face counting to ten with a voice that sounds like it belongs to Herbert the Pervert. Joke aside, the animation is really strange, if anybody hasn't seen it, I suggest you check this one out.
3:Dragon in the Box - Kermit talks to Grover about the word in and tell him to go in a box. Then a creepy dragon comes out of the box and growls which obviously scares Kermit away. Then they do a creepy close up of the dragon that probably made many 4-years-old run for the hills.
4:Mystic Twenty - This animation shows a four armed Hindu god counting to ten with creepy Indian music and a lady's voice counting. I personally think it is a beautiful animation, but when you're 3-years-old there's something extremely creepy about that.
5:The I-Beam - This another one I don't get. All the video is is a film of a letter I being made in a steel mill with intense music playing. People act like it is the scariest they've ever seen, which obviously they've never seen Alice Cooper on The Muppet Show.
6:Snake Film - Since I'm afraid of snakes, I figured I would include this one. The film is a video of a snake. This one certainly unnerved me when I watched it on YouTube, mostly because snakes freak me out. But besides that, the music is very peaceful and calming. If you like snakes (which I can't see how), I recommend you check this one out.
7:Beautiful Day Monster's B-Sound - The Beautiful Day Monster was a monster who showed up on the Ed Sullivan show in a sketch where he tries to ruin a girl's beautiful day. Then he appeared in some later Sesame Street sketches including one where Kermit is talking about the letter B. He then shows up and yells "BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" and the screen fogs up. As the Nostalgia Critic would say "You know, FOR KIDS!?".
8:Nose Morph - This animation shows a lady's nose changing shapes with a shrill squeaking sound. The clip is VERY weird and has no educational value whatsoever, 'nuff said.
9:Danger - This clip shows a cartoon baby with no arms (who looks a little like Stewie) standing next to a danger sign and imagining falling off a cliff and getting eaten by a Cyclops.
10:The Bird and the Toothbrush - This animation is SO weird. It shows a Claymation bird sitting on a hill and two toothbrushes pop out of the hill and brush his teeth. The bird then starts singing annoyingly off key and the sketch ends. I'm sorry but, what the heck did I just watch? The whole thing was very weird and surreal.
